Doctors at Artemis Health Institute in Gurgaon, outside of New Delhi have successfully operated on an infant born premature and suffering from a rare brain condition. This surgery was performed on August 24th, on month-old Dev Yadav, whose chances of survival were almost zero at birth.
The baby weighed only 800 grams, had poor immunity, and his organs and skin were not fully formed. He suffered from a condition where cerebro-spinal fluid in the brain increases, compressing the brain and decreasing brain activity. The chance of an infant suffering from this condition is 1%.
To save his life, a 45 cm long shunt was put in place connecting the brain with the abdominal cavity, where cerebro-spinal fluid was drained and absorbed. This was a high-risk operation, but Dev is now recovering well and has been discharged.
